Obituary of Alton Auvil
Sgt. First Class Alton Harris Auvil,
78, of Aurora, died Tuesday June 20, 2023 at home surrounded by family.
The son of the late Troy William and Rena Yulala James Auvil, he was born May 15, 1945 in Aurora.
He was a member of the Stemple Ridge Church where he was a Sunday School Teacher for many years.
Alton graduated from Aurora High School in the class of 1963. He went on to graduate from the University of Charleston and WV University. He worked as a State Surveyor for the WV Department of Highway. He retired from the US Army National Guard where he had been stationed at the 119th at Clarksburg and the 229th Camp Dawson.
He was active in the Mountain Lions Club, Rowlesburg Masonic Lodge No. 165, Rowlesburg Chapter #127 O.E.S., AAHS, Aurora Senior Citizens, the American Legion and served on the Board of Directors of the Solid Waste Authority.
Alton could speak four languages including Italian, Spanish, German and English.
He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Patricia A. Auvil; two brothers, Kenneth Auvil of Kingwood and James (Penny) Auvil of Aurora; four sisters, Selma (Ralph) Cummings of Aurora, Dorothy Calhoun Hauser of Kingwood, Jeckie (Darrell) Boggess of Rainelle, WV and Loeda Maloy. who makes her home with Alton and Patty; Stepchildren, Charles, Bobbie Jo, Darlene and Robert. Kevin and Mike, who were also like sons to him; several step grandchildren, step great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Huey, Troy, Norman and Dorian Auvil; and one sister, Arvelle Smith.
Friends and family will be received at the Arthur H. Wright Funeral Home in Terra Alta on Thursday June 22, 2023, from 5:00-8:00 pm and at the Stemple Ridge Centennial Union Church in Aurora from 10:00 a.m. on Friday June 23, 2023, until the 11:00 a.m. service time with Pastor Sabrina Tenney officiating. Interment will follow in the WV National Cemetery in Pruntytown, WV. Military rites will be conducted by the Preston County Honor Guard, the WVANG Honor Guard and the Masons.
