Obituary of Darrell James Shaffer

Darrell J. Shaffer, 75, of Terra Alta passed away on Friday, June 2, 2023, at Preston Memorial Hospital in Kingwood.

He was born on February 17, 1948, in Freeport, WV, a son of the late Ersel James Shaffer and Ida Ethel (Rishell) Shaffer.

He retired from Hopemont Hospital after 30 years of service. After his retirement, he went to work for Preston Fencing for many years. He loved to deer hunt, ride his four-wheeler, watch WVU football and basketball and going to the Terra Alta Stockyard on Fridays. Darrell had many friends and was dearly loved by all who knew him.

Darrell is survived by one brother, Michel Shaffer and wife Vickie of Terra Alta; one niece, Jessica Upole and husband, Will; one nephew, Michel Shaffer Jr.; two great nephews, Jerrod and Seth Upole and one brother-in-law, James Slawter of Aurora.  

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Vava Jane (Bowman) Shaffer and two sisters, Deloris Shaffer Slawter and Sharon Shaffer.

To honor Darrell’s wishes, the Arthur H. Wright Funeral Home in Terra Alta will provide cremation services. A private graveside service at the Aurora Cemetery will be held at a later date, with Rev. Stanley Waybright officiating.
