Robert Burton Martin, II
64 of Rowlesburg, WV passed from his earthly life at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Tuesday, May 02, 2023 surrounded by loved ones.
Rob was born in Phillippi, WV on August 2, 1958 to Robert and Rosemary Jackson Martin. Rob was a Navy brat and spent his childhood in Rhode Island, Newfoundland and Maryland. His early years were filled with frequent trips to his parents' hometown, Rowlesburg. where he would eventually make his home. Rob graduated with the class of 1976 from Rowlesburg High School.
Rob worked as a trackman and brakeman with Chessie System. He made his career in energy generation working for Allegheny Energy's Albright Station for 28 years. He remained with the company following acquisition by First Energy and finished his career as a Senior Generation Specialist at the Harrison Power Station.
Rob possessed a strong sense of public service and throughout the years served his community in a multitude of ways. He served on the Rowlesburg Park Commission, Town Council and a term as Mayor. Rob was a Master Mason and member of Blue Lodge, No. 165, A.F. & A.M., Rowlesburg, WV. He was a volunteer at Rowlesburg Park, Rowlesburg School, South Preston Food Pantry, as well as other organizations and events. Rob spent countless hours mentoring youth through various local athletic programs.
Rob married Margaret Alexandra Cline Martin October 16, 1982. He always told his children he married his best friend. Rob was first and foremost a provider and father, teaching his children life skills and coaching them academically and in the arena of athletics. Completely dedicated to his children, he never missed a special event or ball game. He enjoyed floating the Cheat River in a canoe or kayak, reading, travel, his rocking chair on the front porch and especially his grandchildren. Rob was an avid car enthusiast and sports fan, each year anticipating March Madness and the World Series.
Rob was preceded in death by his father Robert Martin, mother Rosemary Jackson Martin, infant sister Cheryl Martin, Mother-in-law Jane P. Cline, Father-in-law Robert D. and Billie Cline; paternal grandparents Asa and Lottie (Wagner) Martin; Maternal grandparents Leonard (Pop) and Lena Loughrie Jackson; and son-in-law Brady Hoffer.
Rob is survived by his wife of 40 years Margaret Cline Martin and his children Christian and Sarah Martin of Bruceton Mills, WV, Caitlin and Sadee Martin of Camp Humphreys, South Korea and Mackenzie Martin and Andrew Artis of Rowlesburg; Grandchildren: Kilie Martin, Elizabeth (Libby) Hoffer, Christian Martin II, Gretchen Martin; and his Aunt Nancy Martin Goff.
Surviving relatives include Robert (Bobby) Jackson, Terry Reneman, June Sisler, Patty Duncan, Vicky Jackson, Robert (Rob) Jackson, Joseph (Todd) Jackson, William Jackson, Janet Smith, Randy Martin, Dana Martin, Connie Martin, Richard Goff, Burton Goff and Lisa Jordan; In-laws: Charles and Cheryl Cline, Robert and Jane Cline Chilton, Jon Ellen Cline, James (Jake) and Katherine Cline Everly, John and Loree Pritt, Paul (Moe) and Missy Pritt and Anne Felty; Nieces: Alison and Matt Clemens, Ashli Pritt, Emily Pritt, Sara Pritt and Abigail Cline; Nephews: John (Jay) and Tracy Grago, Charlie and Kathy Cline, Todd and Elesa Everly, Zachary Everly, Ryan Pritt, Logan Pritt, Kolten Pritt, Connor Cline and Jameson Everly.
Rob had notable friendships with Don Walters, Joe Grimm, Dallas Wolfe and many others. He shared a special bond with Aislinn Pratt, Timothy Shay, Jenny Whitener, Deborah Loughrie Guthrie and John Noah Loughrie. If you were a friend of his children, you were treated as one of his own.
Rob is greatly missed by his dog Gretyl (Little Girl)
There will be a Celebration of Life with visitation from 2pm to 3pm, service at 3pm with fellowship and dinner to follow on May 13, 2023 at the Szylagi Center, 20 North Buffalo Street, Rowlesburg, WV 26425 (Former Rowlesburg High School Old Gym).
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Shriner Children's Hospital in Rob's memory and should be made payable to the Osiris Shriners, PO Box 2048, Wheeling, WV 26003
