Obituary of Jay Michael Smith

Jay Michael Smith, 54, formerly of Kingwood, died unexpectedly on Monday,December 12th, 2016 at his home in Morgantown. He was the son of James E Smith of Kingwood and the late Connie Carrico Smith of Rowlesburg. In addition to his father he is survived by his loving wife, Dawn (Young) Smith whom he married October 4, 2002 in Moab, Utah; two precious daughters, McKinzee Carrico Smith and Addison Grace Smith; sister, Sonia Greaser and husband Robby Greaser of Terra Alta; brother, Jeff Smith and wife Cassie Smith of Morgantown; niece, Chelsey Greaser; nephews, Dane Greaser and Levi Smith; mother and father-in-law, Jerry and Margie Young of Ft. Ashby; brother-in-law, Eddie Young and wife Paulette Young of Ridgeley; uncles and aunts; cousins; and many many friends. Jay was born in Morgantown on May 2,1962. He graduated from Central Preston High School in 1980. Following high school Jay attended WVU graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business. Jay spent most of his career co-operating Smith Nationwide Insurance Agency in Kingwood along with his father and brother. Following an early retirement he stepped outside of his comfort zone to pursue an interest in the oil and gas industry working as a Pipeline Inspector for the past 4 years. Jay loved life! He was a true adventure seeker and risk taker in every way, loving to have fun. He was a free spirit that loved spending time involving the outdoors. Jay could water ski barefoot, snow skied the Rocky Mountains, kayaked class 5 and 6 rivers, had his pilot's license and flew his own plane. He loved to go hunting, fishing, camping, and hiking. He took a family vacation rock crawling along the Rubicon Trail in California and traveled thousands of miles cross country riding his Harley with friends.. He also enjoyed many wonderful trips with family and friends to Mexico, Costa Rica, Canada, and all over the United States. Currently Jay attended the Kingdom Evangelical Methodist Church in Westover. He had a gracious heart and was always willing to help out anyone in need. He never met a stranger and treated everyone he met equally. Above all Jay was a devoted husband and loving father. He loved spending time with his family, he taught McKinzee how to ride a dirt bike and to shoot a bow. He enjoyed taking Addison to local parks and playgrounds and taught her how to swim. He would do anything to see a smile and truly enjoyed spending time with “his girls”. Family and Friends will be received at the Kingdom EMC in Westover on Monday, December 19, 2016 from 4pm until 7pm with a service to follow with Pastor Kevin Cain officiating. A private family burial will take place at a later date.
